Anhaguama: Black Metal from Brazil
Drawing inspiration from the classic sounds of 80s and 90s death and black metal bands, Anhaguama delivers a powerful and dark musical experience.
Hello Anhaguama! How are you? A pleasure to interview you.
Hello, everything is great and how are you? Thank you very much for the opportunity to share some of our work with your audience.
I understand that the band was born in 2007, so you have been together for exactly seventeen years.
How did the idea of creating the band come up?
The initial idea for the band was mine, I wanted to play death/black metal influenced by bands from the 80s/90s.
Who are the current members?
Eosphorus (Guitars/Vocals), Azatoth (Bass), Necromanscius Apocalypticus (Drums/Vocals)
Are they the same since the band was founded?
No, I’m the only one who has been in the band since the beginning, Necromancius Apocalypticus been in the band since 2007, and Azatoth since 2022.
Do they have experience from previous projects?
Yes, me and Azatoth previously played in Choronzonic.
I was struck by the fact that you define yourselves as a Black Metal band and you are from Brazil, because the first thing I thought was that you were from a European country, cradle of this genre.
Why did you choose Black Metal as the band’s style?
It was a natural choice, it’s a musical style that I really like and I’ve always wanted to have a band in that style.
Could you mention your main influences?
Bands like: Morbid Angel, Sarcófago, Blasphemy, Beherit, Mystifier, Profanatica, Absu, Marduk, Mortuary Drape, Rotting Christ, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Krisiun, Autopsy, Archgoat and many others.
Let’s talk about your latest work, the EP “Formula of Zos Vel Thanatos”, which was released at the end of October 2022.
How was the process of editing and recording it?
We started the composition process in 2020/2021, and recorded it in May/2022 at Estudio Monolito in Mogi das Cruzes-Sp, Brazil.
André Marques was responsible for recording/mixing and also recorded the bass lines.
How many songs does it include and what themes did you include in it?
There are 5 songs, the main themes are Thelema and other writings by Aleister Crowley, the Magic of Austin Osman Spare (Zos Kia System) and Greek mythology.
Do you have any audiovisual material?
We have a lyric video produced in 2022 by W.Perna from the band Genocidio.
Regarding its promotion and diffusion. How was it publicized?
We released this work in digital format in October/2022, and on CD December/2022.
How was it generally received, both by the public and by the specialized press?
The reception in general has been very good, especially from the public who have bought our CD.
Where can a copy of it be obtained?
The CD can be purchased in several stores, mainly in Brazil.
It caught my attention that, besides this album, the band has another official album in 2008 and two split albums. This is strange, because usually other bands release albums on a regular basis.
What is the reason for this, lack of time or factors beyond the band’s control?
The main reason was the lack of time to dedicate to the band, focusing on my professional career at that time.
Doesn’t this affect the band’s trajectory?
I don’t think so, when we released Formula of Zos Vel Thanatos, it seemed like it hadn’t been that long since we released new material.
On another subject. It’s been 2 years since your last musical work.
When can we expect a new album?
We intend to release a new album in 2025.
Could you tell us what the band is working on right now?
We are starting rehearsals for the new compositions that will be on the next album.
Regarding the band. What are the most immediate plans?
Continue the promotion of the EP “Formula of Zos Vel Thanatos”. And focus on rehearsals for new compositions.
Do you have any upcoming presentations planned?
Yes, we will play in Belo Horizonte — MG, Brazil, on 11/16/2024 at Pvtridvz Vox Ritual.
Well Anhaguama, that’s all. Thank you for your time and just wish you success in your career. Before we finish, something you would like to say.
Thank you very much for the support and opportunity to promote our band, I also want to thank your readers and all the people who have supported the band over all these years.
