“A Symphony of Pestilence” is the orchestral version of ‘Pestilence’, both are the most recent albums of the Italian power metallers Draconicon. About both albums let’s see what Alex Moth, one of their members, told us. By: Alejandro Pérez

Hi Draconicon! Thanks for joining us today! Let´s start from the beginning.

Hello! Thanks for your time, let’s do it!

Can you tell us how the band was formed and what inspired your unique blend of power metal and gothic influences?

The band was formed in 2020, and our idea was to make a genre as joyful as power metal feel darker and gloomier. Gothic influences were a perfect match in terms of attire and colors.

How did the pandemic influence your music and the themes of your debut album “Dark Side of Magic”?

The pandemic essentially made it difficult to secure a deal with a record label for our debut album Dark Side of Magic. The real influence of this challenging period is expressed in Pestilence, the title is no coincidence.

Can you tell us about the trajectory of each member of the band and their musical influences?

Our influences range from classic heavy metal to metal core, from power metal to melodic death, even touching on electronic and classical music. Some of the bands we all agree on as references include Powerwolf, Sabaton, Ghost, Gloryhammer, Twilight Force, Pop Evil, Kamelot, Beast in Black, and Arion.

Your latest album, “Pestilence” was released in 2023. Can you share some insights into the creative process behind this album?

With Pestilence, we undoubtedly reached new heights in terms of songwriting complexity and the depth of lyrics and themes. It was a very thoughtful album; the pandemic period during which we composed it made it a true ‘studio album.’ This makes each track quite challenging to perform live with technical precision, but after all, aren’t the best challenges the ones that push you beyond your limits?

What can fans expect from “Pestilence” in terms of sound and lyrical content?

Certainly not the joyful or epic themes typical of the genre. Pestilence delves into introspection, exploring how our traumas shape us, how our inner demons can take control of our lives, and the darker, more repulsive side that every human being harbors deep down.

Can you tell us more about the recording and editing process for “Pestilence”? How was the experience?

Let’s say that for the drums, guitars, violin, and orchestral parts, there weren’t any major complications, everything went according to plan. The vocals, however, took longer than expected, both in terms of recording and editing. This was due to some last minute changes in the vocal melodies and a reworking of some lyrics during the production phase, which caused a few setbacks.

You´ve also worked on an orchestral version of your album titled “A Symphony of Pestilence”. What inspired this project and how did it come together?

The idea of releasing an orchestral version of the album was conceived from the very beginning. After all, when working with an orchestrator of Francesco Ferrini’s caliber from Fleshgod Apocalypse, a top-tier result is guaranteed. It only felt natural to release a purely orchestral version.

How does “A Symphony of Pestilence” differ from the original album in terms of sound and emotional impact?

Certainly, without the drums and guitars, the power of the original is lost, and without the violin and especially the vocals, some tracks also lose their depth. However, on an emotional level, everything is perfectly conveyed through the orchestrations.

Looking ahead, what are Draconicon’s plans for the future?

We are looking to expand our network of collaborators, especially when it comes to booking agencies. We are very focused on reaching major European festivals.

Any upcoming tours or new project that you can share with us?

We can definitely say that we are already writing new material. As for tours, we are actively looking for opportunities. Unfortunately, it’s not easy for an emerging band like ours, but the right offer will surely come.

Well Draconicon, that´s all! Thank you for your time and I wish you success in your career. Before we finish, is there anything you would like to say?

Thank you for your time and to everyone who will read this! Listen to our unique sound, embrace the dark side, and JOIN THE ORDER DRACONIS
