Dyscordia leads us “on the road to oblivion”
Dyscordia is a melodic metalband from Belgium. The band consists of long-time metal veterans who were the driving force behind bands like Gwyllion, Double Diamond, Artrach, Anesthesy, Impedigon and Rhymes of Destruction.
According to your bio the band was born in 2010, so you have been created for a long time. How did the idea of creating the band come up?
The band was indeed originated in 2010 and consists of long-time metal veterans who were the driving force behind Belgian bands like Gwyllion, Double Diamond, Artrach, Anesthesy, Impedigon and Rhymes of Destruction.
Who are the current members of the band and what other bands do they come from?
At the time, we were searching for a new challenge, we got together, jammed a few times and felt an immediate connection. Some of us really like symphonic power metal, others are more into folk metal, some like death and black metal.
The combination of those influences really define the character of Dyscordia. Powerful riffs, combined with clean vocals and grunts, progressive bits, and recognizable melodic pieces.
How would you define your musical style and what would you mention as your main influences?
The music and bands that influence us are too numerous to mention.
Let’s talk about your new album “The Road to Oblivion”. How was the editing and recording process? How many tracks are included and what are the themes about?
We always start the process of an album by generating ideas and bringing them together. Our guitar players Guy and Martijn work out most of these ideas into demo tracks, we discuss them together and try to puzzle the pieces together into songs. Piet, our lead singer, has the final word in realizing the lyrics. The lyrics are mostly autobiographic, and pretty dark. I always wonder where Piet gets his inspiration. As usual, the listener can easily relate with the lyrics, as they appeal to most of us and tell stories of everyday life.
When realizing “The Road to Oblivion”, we got in contact with Yarne Heylen for mixing and mastering. We’re very excited about the end result. It sounds awesome.
Do you have any audiovisual material?
We created two videos’ for this album, the song “Hell” was released in 2023, we release a really beautiful comic like lyric video for the song “The Passenger” on April fool’s day. You can find all our videos on our YouTube channel.
“The Road to Oblivion” will be released on April 17th.
How do you plan to promote it?
Do you already have a presentation concert planned?
Could you tell us something in advance?
Where it will be possible to get a copy of it?
How do you think it will be received in general, both by the public and the specialized press?
We hope to get good reviews of course, but in the end, we just hope the public will like the new album. We have a large fan base, these people follow us everywhere, it’s truly a kind of Army (they even name themselves the DAF, Dyscordia Army Fanbase). With this fourth album, hopefully more people will join our “army” 😊. We are planning a presentation concert in our hometown of Kortrijk in Belgium, we already have a dozen concerts planned in the Benelux region, we also play Belgium’s finest metal festival Alcatraz. Play, perform and party for as many people we can.
Dyscordia is a DIY band in terms of releasing the album, promo, booking, merchandise, …. We do all these things ourselves, which means that we have a hand in the entire process of releasing an album. That has a lot of benefits, but also a couple of disadvantages. We don’t have a record label or large funds in terms of promotion. Fortunately, or unfortunately, there are a lot of music platforms where you can stream our album. Hopefully people will pick up our tunes and tip friends to check out our music. We’re very grateful to be able to do this interview. It helps us in our mission to reach out to as many people as we can.
People who want a physical copy of our album, cd or vinyl, can order these on our website www.dyscordia.com
Back to the initial question. The band has been created for more than 10 years and now you are on your fourth studio album. I think that’s a good path for any band. How do you feel so far? Do you think you have accomplished everything you have set out to do so far? How much has the band and each of its members grown?
We are very fortunate to be able to do this for more than 13 years, having released 4 albums so far. We have a large fan base; we have played a couple of the biggest festivals around. We have accomplished a lot, but we are still eager to realize our dreams. We still have some things on our bucket list, such as touring around Europe or other continents (Big in Japan 😊), playing Wacken for the first time, or Graspop for the second time. Maybe we can join a metal cruise some day? We have grown musically, and want to grow professionally as well.
Back to the band. Besides the release of the new album, what other plans do you have in mind? Maybe some national or international touring?
As mentioned earlier, we really want to expand our territory in every aspect of playing in a band. We remain very ambitious, and hope to reach as many metalheads as possible.
Well, Dyscordia, that’s all. Thank you for your time and I wish you the best of luck with your new album. Before we finish, something you want to say.
Thank you Alejandro for your time and your interest in the band, thanks to the readers for checking out this interview and our music. Hope to see you on the road. Yours truly, Wouter Nottebaert, bass player.
