The Dead Daisies: “The only thing we wanted was “ENERGY” and “FUN”!!! (interview + review)
“Light ’Em Up” is the most recent album from the band The Dead Daisies, which marks the return of John Corabi to the lineup. With this new album and with Corabi on vocals, the band proves that the energy of rock is more alive than ever.
“Light ’Em Up” has been very well received.
How has the experience of the release been, and how has the audience reacted so far?
It’s been AMAZING so far!!! The audiences have embraced the new songs, and are singing every word with us as usual!!! And all of the reviews have been positive as well.
What inspired the creation of Light ’Em Up?
How did the musical direction of this album come about?
We really didn’t focus on direction. We always just write and let the music go where it NATURALLY wants to go. The only thing we wanted was “ENERGY” and “FUN”!!!
The energy is undeniable!
Could you tell us a bit about the process of recording the album?
Were there any memorable moments in the studio?
We always have a great time working on records. We really do enjoy creating together and respect each other’s talents, so the “process” is always productive but a lot of fun. This time was especially memorable because we had the opportunity to do some recording at the legendary FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where Aretha Franklin, The Allman Brothers, and Lynyrd Skynyrd and many more recorded!!!
Could you talk to us about some of the standout songs on the album, like “Times Are Changing” and “I Wanna Be Your Bitch”?
What stories or messages are you trying to convey with these songs?
With the current state of the world, we tried to keep things “light” on the record. “Times Are Changing” is saying if you want “change” …. it’s up to you to make it happen!!! Put your head down, focus, and do whatever you set your mind to!!! “I Wanna Be Your Bitch” is a tongue in cheek statement about being in a relationship that isn’t that you KNOW is horrible, but the SEX is so good you disregard all the negative signs…which I’ve done way too many times!!! Lol
The album has a great variety of sounds and textures.
How do you balance maintaining the essence of hard rock while exploring new musical territories?
Again…we don’t think about how we want the songs to sound. We don’t “force” the music in a certain direction. We work on riffs/ideas we ALL like, and let the songs progress naturally
We know that The Dead Daisies has always been a band that shines live.
How has it been taking this new album to the stage?
Have you noticed any particular reactions from the fans?
As I stated earlier, the reaction has been AMAZING!!! We do 3–4 songs live, from the new record and they’re going over GREAT! The fans are singing every word with us, and very enthusiastic when we finish the tunes!!!
Over the years, you’ve worked with several talented musicians in different lineups. How has that influenced the sound of The Dead Daisies?
How would you describe the current chemistry within the band?
Working with The Dead Daisies has been incredible!! I’ve NEVER been involved in a band that creates music as fast or easily as this band!! There’s zero egos, or attitudes. We all want what’s best for “THE BAND…” We’ve all learned positive and negative things from all of our previous experiences, and we just try to apply the POSITIVE ideas to our music, live shows, and every day.
On a personal level, how do you feel about the band’s evolution from its beginnings to this point?
I personally think the band has grown with each record. But the songs, music, and production have been great from the beginning. With each record there’s always going to be “challenges” and hopefully you overcome the challenges, and learn or grow as a band and an individual.
How would you describe the band’s evolution from your previous albums, Holy Ground and Radiance, to Light ’Em Up?
I can’t compare “Light ‘Em’ Up” to the Holy Ground, or Radiance records as I had NOTHING to do with those. All I can say is we had a blast writing, recording and performing the songs from “Light ‘Em’ Up!!!
If you could define Light ’Em Up in one word, what would it be?
FUN….
Finally, what would you say to fans who haven’t listened to Light ’Em Up yet?
Give it a listen!!! If you’re into straight ahead, classic ROCK AND ROLL, you will enjoy this record!!! It’s energetic, and fun, and made to be played LOUD!!!
To wrap things up, what’s next for The Dead Daisies?
What plans do you have after the release of Light ’Em Up?
We are currently touring in support of the record, and will continue to do so into 2025. But we also recorded a “Blues” record which will also be released in 2025 at some point so there’s a bunch of great things happening in the future!!! So keep checking www.thedeaddaisies.com for news!!!
Again, thank you for your time for this interview! I hope to see you live again someday! A last word to your fans.
All I can say is THANK YOU for all the love and support the last 10 years, and hopefully we can continue TOGETHER with you for another 10!!!!

Light ’Em Up” review
“Light ’Em Up”, released on September 6, 2024, is the seventh studio album by the multinational super-group The Dead Daisies. This album marks the return of their charismatic vocalist John Corabi, who had a previous stint with the band and was replaced by Glenn Hughes for two albums. The current lineup boasts an impressive roster: David Lowy on guitar, Doug Aldrich on guitar, Michael Devin on bass, and Tommy Clufetos on drums.
The album represents a return to the band’s classic hard rock roots, offering a blend of powerful riffs, catchy hooks, and driving rhythms. The production quality is top-notch, capturing the raw energy and polished sound that fans of the band have come to expect. The Dead Daisies worked with acclaimed producer Marti Frederiksen who has previously collaborated with bands like Carrie Underwood, Steven Tyler and other artists, to craft a sound that is both modern and nostalgically reminiscent of rock’s golden eras.
The album has received a mixed yet mostly positive response from critics. While some have praised the return to a more classic rock sound and the high-energy performances, others have noted that the album doesn’t break much new ground compared to their previous work. However, the return of John Corabi has been a highlight for many, bringing a renewed vigor and familiarity to the band’s sound.
Long-time fans of The Dead Daisies have welcomed the new album with open arms, celebrating the return of Corabi and the band’s commitment to delivering solid rock music. The infectious energy and catchy hooks of “Light ’Em Up” have resonated well with listeners, ensuring that the album is a strong addition to the band’s discography.
“Light ’Em Up” is a robust album that showcases The Dead Daisies’ ability to create timeless hard rock music. The combination of powerful riffs, catchy melodies, and John Corabi’s dynamic vocals makes it a compelling listen for fans of the genre. While it may not push the boundaries of innovation, it is a solid and enjoyable record that continues the band’s legacy in the rock world.
